Researching a new career?

There are many ways to research a new career. You can use industry related job boards, organization websites, interview someone in your chosen field or watch video content related to your industry. The last technique mentioned is one of my favorite ways to receive information.

"How To" videos and online tutorials and online education has been an increasingly popular way for people to learn. Recently, I came across howcast.com when searching for additional resources to refer to entry-level design professionals.

Why should we hire you?

What is an interviewer asking when they pose the question, "Why should we hire you?" From my experience, this question can be asked several different ways and more than once during an interview.

For example:

Why should we hire you?
Tell me about yourself?
What are your strengths?
Tell me about your experience?

These questions are best answered in a format that allows you to either tell a story relating to your performance as a high functioning employee or describes a problem that you solved for your previous employer. This will be relevant to the person interviewing you.

I advise against giving one line answers like, "I am a hard worker." That is a sure way to bore the interviewer and show that you absolutely did not prepare before the interview. You should take some time to prepare before any interview. How do you do this? Think about your accomplishments. How did you achieve these accomplishments? What was the process, starting point, problem and solution. Follow this format...

Create a few simple stories that illustrate the following;

Problem, situation, or opportunity you faced
Actions you took
Results of the action you took to benefit your boss or company

Example:

Department sales were down 5%
Created a referral incentive program to reward referrals for new sales
Increase sales by 15% within 30 days

Most likely, your story will have more details when you use it to answer questions like, "Why should we hire you?" The point here is to have some accomplishments in story format that you can recall during an interview to illustrate success and value as a possible new hire.

Need help finding an entry-level design job?

Finding an entry-level job in design is not difficult but it can be confusing and frustrating if your concept of entry-level does not align with the marketplace.

For example, some recent graduates only want a full-time, permanent job and will not consider freelancing or doing temp or project work. This will automatically put them behind their competitors that have started out doing freelance projects such as logo designs or poster designs for local businesses or start ups. Every design you create after graduation will help build up your portfolio. It will also prove your desire to work in the competitive design industry.

I recommend that students start looking for freelance projects at least a year before they graduate. The sooner the better depending on your skill level. This will give you plenty of opportunities to make mistakes that can be "lessons learned," while still a student.

Listing several freelance projects on your resume with a portfolio that supports your experience will give you the best chance at getting that full-time, entry-level position. Internships can also be a huge competitive factor. Consider doing several internships and freelancing at the same time if you are having trouble obtaining interviews for full-time positions. Social Media and the Job Search

So you want to find a new job but have not kept up with all the social media tools that are available. Where do you start?

LinkedIn? Twitter? Facebook? Google+?

Each social media tool has different benefits but I believe the best resource for creating a professional profile and connecting with recruiters and employers is LinkedIn.com. Users can create a profile, post links, add applications for presentations with SlideShare.net, research companies and join or create groups related to their industry. LinkedIn groups can be a powerful tool for connecting with your industry. For example, I am the creator of CreativeInterns group and a member of The Art Institute group.

Group members often share their needs, skills and updates within the group forum as well as ask for advice and referrals during online conversations. Contribute quality content and resources within the group and you may be ranked as a "Top Influencer." This kind of interaction can increase your exposure to employers, recruiters and industry professionals.

The other social media tools are useful too but do not forget to leave your house and meet real live people at events. There is no substitute for meeting people in person and sharing conversations and resources offline.

When opportunity knocks will you be able to say yes? Or maybe a better question to ask is, "Will you be open enough to consider the opportunity?" Being open to all possibilities is a powerful notion but difficult for some of us who have full schedules, back to back meetings or piles of administrative work that bogs us down to our computer, iPhone or Blackberry.

Here are some recommendations for anyone that is thinking about a career change but feels they do not have the ability, openness or freedom to say "yes" to new opportunities that could push their career into a new and exhilarating direction.

Take some time off for the sole purpose of self-discovery.
Volunteer for an organization that relates to your beliefs.

There are numerous online resources, here is one: http://www.voa.org/.

Attend and volunteer at an event that aligns with your interests.
My favorite - If you have enough money saved (rent, food and health care benefits for at least a year) consider resigning from your current job or asking for a leave of absence. For me, this is the ideal situation to enable maximum openness and availability to say "yes" to any opportunity that comes your way. Frame it as a new beginning and not as quiting your job.

As you can see, career change and openness to new opportunities can seem risky or fearful and can be handled many different ways. Consider which method is best for your specific situation and try one or more of the above recommendations. Preparing for an interview requires an understanding of your skills and the ability to talk about those skills during an interview. Before you interview, review the questions below, write the answers down and read them. Do the answers make sense? Would you want to hire this person? This kind of exercise will help you be more prepared when you interview.

Here are 10 interview questions to consider before you meet with an employer. Do your best to answer these questions and you will have excellent topics for discussion during your next interview.

A Creative Way To Promote Yourself

This project pictured above gave me an idea. If you are looking for a new way to promote yourself, try stuffing an envelope with your business card or resume and hanging it from different trees within a busy park such as Central Park in New York City. On the envelope, write attention getting words like "Check this out!" or "Top Secret" or "Looking for Work." Curious people can't help but to open the envelopes and read the information inside. You never know who will investigate your envelope. I would love to hear any success stories from this idea.

Tips to calm the nerves before an interview.

There are several steps we can take to calm our nerves before an interview. Here are some of my favorite preparation techniques;

Do your research - Review the company website, annual report and company articles or press releases.
Prepare appropriate information - Prepare your resume, portfolio and reference contact information beforehand.
Practice answering the question, "Why should we hire you?" - This question can be asked in several different ways. The trick here is to verbally communicate your achievements and how those achievements translate into benefits for the hiring manager. If possible, tell a story that illustrates one of your achievements.
Know where you are going - Always take a practice run to the office location. Do this exercise during the work week so you can get an idea of the normal traffic delays or public transportation schedule. This will assure you know where to go on the day of the interview and reduce the chances of arriving late.
Meditate - Do this exercise before you walk into the office building for the interview. Take 10 to 15 deep breaths before the interview. Inhale from the nose and exhale from the mouth. On the inhale, fill the lower abdomen first and the upper lungs last. On the exhale, release from the upper lungs and then complete the exhale in the lower abdomen.
Embrace your newfound calmness and have a great interview!

Paying interns a minimum hourly wage is ideal but if your company is like many small start-ups you may not have the budget to cover the cost. Luckily there are many ways to reward or compensate an intern. Here are some of the obvious and not so obvious ways to compensate an intern...

Credit: The most common thing an intern could receive is college credit.
Stipend: This could be a fixed daily sum for lunch. Even $20 a day will make a huge difference for a starving college student.
Special Perks: Admittance to exclusive business events or parties. For example, fashion design interns would be excited about attending a special event hosted by a famous fashion designer.
Completion Bonus: You could provide a special incentive or reward to the intern when they complete their assignment.
Gift Cards: Get to know your interns. If they are into music give them an itunes gift card. If they are creative, try an art supply store gift card and if they are a foodie, splurge for a restaurant gift card or certificate.
Positive Feedback: Everyone likes to know they are doing a good job so give positive feedback to your intern. Be specific, identify an area of strength and give the feedback in person or in a hand written note.

Last but not least, if the interns does a great job, offer them a job!!!

Are you are still looking for a full-time job?

I talk to people every day that are looking for full-time, freelance and project based opportunities. Some of the most common challenges these job seekers report are the following;

Frustration due to not hearing back from the companies when they apply.
Exhaustion from submitting resumes online and filling out forms.
Confusion about the appropriate way to follow up with today's social media resources.

The single best advice I could give job seekers that are feeling frustrated exhausted or confused is to take break from the job search methods you are currently using and try something different. If you have been online for 3 hours applying to jobs then take a break. Go to an event related to your industry. Talk to a person within your industry. Research your industry and find target companies to contact directly via the telephone for an informational interview.

Others may consider looking at jobs in a new location. Maybe your industry is no longer viable within your geographic location. Check out the Occupational Handbook and review your industry statistics based on location and job title.

If you need help then ask for it. Find others in your situation and form a job search group to support each other. Consider volunteering to get out of the house and into your community. You will have a better chance of hearing about new opportunities from others within your community.

National Association of Colleges and Employers, Face to Face

Today I attended the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) Face to Face event held at New York University. There were numerous career counselors, a panelist consisting of college relations specialists from companies such as L'Oreal, Macy's and Johnson & Johnson. Overall, it was a well organized and relevant event for career industry professionals.

Hot topics such as social media, ethical job search behavior and the recent increased rate of hiring was discussed. The most overwhelming fact for me was that colleges are still extremely understaffed in their career services department to assist the numerous students and alumni that graduate. One career professional I spoke to reported having 3 staff members to assist upwards of 16,000 students.

These numbers would not be so bad if technology made it possible to counsel every student in a shorter period of time or provided a widget that could be inserted into every recent graduate. The widget could make sure the graduate smiled during the interview, avoided using texting language to write thank you emails and blocked eager job seekers from stalking employers on Facebook pages to find out why they never got a call back after the interview.

There is a clear need for one-on-one advisement for recent graduates in order to prepare them for many of the basic career obstacles. Any parent interested in sending their child to a college should do more than review the faculty credentials. Take some time to meet the career services professionals at the institution. These are the people that can really help make a difference in the graduates' life.

The SCT is a self-assessment and portfolio-building tool for students, employees and job-seekers. There are companies that pay stipends and hourly rates for internships. It may take a little effort on the internship seekers part to find companies that pay their interns but it is worth it. Another way to go about getting paid for internship college credits it to get a part-time job related to you industry while you are in school and ask your employer if they would approve your work experience worthy for credit. For example, if you obtain a part-time job as a Graphic Designer and your major is Graphic Arts related you may be able to use the experience as both an internship and work experience for your resume plus get a paycheck. A self-directed job search requires the job-seeker to do research on businesses of interest. The job-seeker also needs to have a fair amount of self-awareness. Realizing personal preferences or having self-awareness as it relates to a career is important when clarifying which companies to research. Basic career inventory questions can achieve this self-awareness. I’ve compiled the following questions for creating increased self-awareness with Art Institute students:

As a job-seeker you can streamline your job search by answering these questions. Afterwards, target companies based on the answers. Then, contact managers within the department of interest, even if they are not presently hiring. This is a form of networking. For example, if you are a Graphic Designer and want to work for an advertising agency in New York City, then you should start promoting your resume and portfolio to the Art Director or Studio Manager within every New York City advertising agency.

This method allows you to promote your skills to a more targeted audience, whether they have a position posted or not. It doesn’t matter. You want your information in front of as many industry professionals as possible. This also helps you create a list of professionals in your industry and build your network. LinkedIn.com is one of the most respected online networking tools for professionals. Complete a profile on LinkedIn.com and you will be one step closer to having a powerful online network.

By calling and emailing professionals when they are not hiring, you are giving yourself an advantage over everyone else who is stuck staring into the abyss of job boards. You are actually networking and talking to people who can help refer you to someone else. Put yourself out there. Sitting in front of the computer all day is not as effective as picking up the phone and making phone calls to key players within targeted companies. Use LinkedIn and Google to research people and companies. Personally, I’d prefer to interview someone who went out of their way to call me directly over someone who found a posting on some stale job board.

Who’s Hiring Now from the Fortune 500 – Vol 1, By www.careeralley.com

The Fortune 500 (and no, it’s not an oversight that I quoted Malcolm Forbes while reviewing the Fortune 500) is as well known as any group. And yes, there are more than a few from last year’s list that are now gone (in one form or another). But that being said, this is still the “top of the heap” and is as good a place as any to look for your next job. Working for a Fortune 500 does not guarantee that you will have a job long term (I should know), but it is a very distinguished list and certainly has more “winners” in the business world than “losers”. Three of the top 5 are in the energy business (no surprise there). Across the first 5 companies reviewed in this post, there were over 2,600 job opportunities (in total) when I checked these sites. This is the first post for this series which will appear in the blog from time to time.

Exxon Mobil- Ranked number 1 (up from number 2 last year), Exxon Mobil is, of course, is in the Oil and Gas business. Their career page has a few tabs at the top on the company as well as a Your Career tab. There is a “Click to Apply” link on the left hand side of the page which takes you directly to a page where you can search for openings and register. If you stick to the main page you can click Locations, Your Career or Global Careers. Whatever your choice of review/entry, you should eventually pick the location where you would like to search (or check several locations). If you would like to check jobs worldwide, click the Click to Apply and then Search Openings. There were 372 jobs (globally) when I checked the site.
Wal-Mart Stores – Another well known name, Wal-Mart was ranked 2 this year (down from 1). There are a number of options when visiting the Wal-Mart Careers page: Sam’s Club, Corporate Careers, Logistics Careers and quite a few more. Their main careers page has a large Apply label right in the middle of the page (which does not link to anything). If you would like to explore first, the left hand side of the page is filled with quite a few options. In addition to the ones I listed, there is also College and Recent Grads, Military, Driving Careers and many more. You can also check for jobs in your area by clicking “in your local area” center page. There is a way to search across all jobs. There were 265 jobs when I checked the site
Chevron – Ranked #3, Chevron is another Oil and Gas company. Their Careers page is crisp and easier to navigate than many career pages. There are tabs at the top for Find a Job, Types of Jobs, Students and Recent Grads and Working at Chevron. On the right hand side there are a few links: Look for Jobs Around the World, a careers link in Spanish and College Recruiting. Clicking Jobs Around the World leads to the Find a Job page where you will need to select a country.
ConocoPhilips – Yet another Oil and Gas company, ConocoPhilips was ranked 4 (up from 5 last year). Their careers page offers two choices: ConocoPhilips Careers and University Recruitment (these are directly below a company overview and are repeated on the left hand side of the page). Once in the careers, there is are a number of choices including picking region, reviewing benefits, Career Development or simply clicking Job Search. There were 51 jobs when I checked the site.
General Electric – Ranked 5 (up from 6), GE is involved in way too many businesses to list here. There are over 300,000 people in over 100 locations (according to the website). Their careers page has a company overview followed by segmented opportunities – University and R&D are featured. Click on Start your Job Search and then Search Openings – there were 1,889 jobs when I checked the site.

Can I negotiate a salary for my internship?

I have advised numerous students to research internship opportunities long before you begin applying. There are companies that pay stipends and hourly rates for internships but it may take a little effort on the internship seekers part to find companies that pay their interns but it is worth it.

Another way to go about getting paid for internship college credits it to get a part-time job related to you industry while you are in school and ask your employer if they would approve your work experience for credit. For example, if you obtain a part-time job as a Graphic Designer and your major is Graphic Art you may be able to use the experience as both an internship and work experience for your resume plus get a paycheck. This situation is win-win for everyone.

Should I assume I didn't get the job? It has been two weeks since the interview and no offer.

There is a good chance that a final decision has not been made if it has only been two weeks after your initial interview. If you were one of the first people to interview then you may even have to wait a month for a decline letter or offer. The interview process can take three months or more to complete for higher level positions. Consider this; at the end of your interview ask questions to help qualify your next steps. This may reduce the feeling of being in limbo after the interview. Some questions to ask include:
• How far along are you in the interview process?
• Are you interviewing many more candidates?
• What date would you ideally like the person to start?
• Is it ok for me to email or call you to see if the position is still available?
• What are the next steps of the interview process?
Getting answers to some of these questions could help shed some light on the pace of the process. The speed of the interview process can vary widely between companies. For example, if you are interviewing for a position at a restaurant the interview process will be much faster than interviewing for a position at a financial services company. The reason being there are usually more internal procedures that need to be completed in a financial services company. In a restaurant the decision can be made by one person while several people may have to review the applicant information at a financial services company.

In order to have a competitive advantage in attaining full-time employment or freelance employment in the creative field it is imperative to implement certain strategies.

1. Online Presence: Anyone working or looking for a new job in the creative industry needs to have an online presence. Even if you have zero dollars in your budget for a website, there are ways to show your portfolio and creative skills off for free.

Online portfolios can be created easily with images, resumes, tags so others can search your work and a unique URL address is provided so the artist can forward their samples digitally. Jobs for creative industries such as 3D animation, industrial design, fashion design, graphic design and many other design related fields are posted as well.

Online portfolios can be created and searched by location category and experience. Job leads are also posted on this site for the creative industry.

2. Brand yourself as well as your resume. Creating a resume in the design field is different than creating a resume in the financial field. Your target contact is usually an art director or someone within the creative industry. Poorly designed resumes in the design field are a sure way to not get an interview.

3. Perform a self-directed job search. This is one of the best ways to attain meaningful and exciting employment within the creative industry. The reason for this is that it requires you as the job seeker to research the industry and complete some sort of self-evaluation and exploration of your strengths, weaknesses and desires. Creating a vision for the perfect job and creating the clarity to target desired companies, cultures, industries, locations and job descriptions will produce confidence in any job seeker.

4. Join a social networking site. There are several social networking sites on the Internet these days. I recommend joining www.linkedin.com to promote your employment experience and work history to professionals in all industries. LinkedIn is an excellent resource to connect with people. It allows you to search for past co-workers and alumni from college.

5. Join an organization in your industry and get involved. This is easy to do and can be completed by paying a small membership fee or by attending specific events being held in your area. Organizations exist for almost every industry. There is the Graphic Artists Guild www.gag.org for graphic designers and the Professional Association for Design www.aiga.org. Meet up groups are also a great way to meet people with similar interests www.meetup.com

6. Register with a recruiter in the creative industry. There are several recruiting companies to choose from. You should never have to pay a fee to work with a recruiter. In my opinion the companies that charge fees to the job seeker are not necessary to partner with. Meet with some of the national companies such as www.aquent.com and www.creativegroup.com.
Learn about targeted self-promotion techniques, online research techniques and outside the box tactics to develop relationships with companies that you want to work with. Many people never take the time to create a clear vision and game plan to reach that vision.

Catch 22

Thought of the week:

How do I get experience in a specific field when I have never worked before? Have you ever interviewed for a job and been denied because of lack of industry experience? Here lies the Catch 22 scenario. How do you get experience in a field if you need experience to get hired?

Great questions!

If you have transferable skills such as excellent customer service skills or unique computer skills like PhotoShop or MS Project, it may not be enough to get that Attorney job without the appropriate education but you could certainly start working in the legal industry as a legal assistant. My point is that it's important to set your goals high but also understand that the best (easiest) way into a specific industry is sometime though the side door.

A recent graduate may face this dilemma more often than a person with a few years of professional work experience. Part-time work and contract jobs give recent graduates an opportunity to try several different types of positions with less commitment than a full time job. It is a good idea to consider taking contract opportunities while you figure out the appropriate career path.

Career changers could always consider strengths and re-write resumes to target specific job descriptions of interest. Volunteering and networking within the industry of interests can also pay dividends when trying to meet people that can help you make that career transition. Also, not all resumes are created equally and getting help on creating a targeted resume is highly recommended for the person in career transition.

Whatever you career challenge is this week, seek assistance. You don't have to do the search alone. There are many professionals willing to help in this area. Ask for help =)
